Unix timestamp converter
Convert Unix timestamps to dates
Runs in your browser. Nothing is uploaded.
How it works
A Unix timestamp counts the seconds since midnight UTC on 1 January 1970. So 1767225600 is the start of 2026. Timestamps from JavaScript usually count milliseconds, and are three digits longer. Paste one here, and we detect which it is, then show it in UTC and in your own time.
date = 1 Jan 1970 00:00 UTC + timestamp seconds
Eleven digits or fewer is read as seconds, and more as milliseconds. We say which one we used.
Negative timestamps are dates before 1970.
Worked example. 1767225600 seconds after the start of 1970 is 2026-01-01 00:00:00 UTC.
Examples
| Timestamp | UTC date |
|---|---|
| 0 | 1970-01-01 00:00:00 UTC |
| 1000000000 | 2001-09-09 01:46:40 UTC |
| 1767225600 | 2026-01-01 00:00:00 UTC |
| 2147483647 | 2038-01-19 03:14:07 UTC |
| -86400 | 1969-12-31 00:00:00 UTC |
What this tool doesn’t cover
- Timestamps don’t count leap seconds.
- Very old 32-bit systems stop at 19 January 2038.
Questions
What is the year 2038 problem?
Older 32-bit systems can’t count past 03:14:07 UTC on 19 January 2038.
Are timestamps in UTC?
Yes. A timestamp is the same everywhere. Only the way it’s shown changes.
How can I tell seconds from milliseconds?
For today’s dates, seconds have 10 digits, and milliseconds have 13.
What is a Unix timestamp?
It’s the number of seconds since 1 January 1970 at 00:00 UTC. Computers use it because it’s one number that’s the same in every time zone.
How do I convert a date to a timestamp?
Enter the date and time, and the tool shows it in seconds and milliseconds. Check the time zone, as it changes the result.
