Work out your body mass index, with Asian cut-offs
Runs in your browser. Nothing is uploaded.
How it works
BMI stands for body mass index. It’s your weight in kilograms divided by your height in metres squared. For most adults, a BMI of 18.5 to 24.9 is called healthy. For Asian adults, including in India, lower cut-offs are often used, with 23 as the start of overweight.
BMI = weight in kg ÷ height in metres²
BMI is a quick screen, not a diagnosis. It doesn’t measure body fat directly, so a muscular person can have a high BMI.
Your height and weight stay in your browser. They only go in a share link if you tick the box.
Worked example. For 65 kg and 1.70 m: 65 ÷ (1.70 × 1.70) = 22.5.

Questions
Why are the Asian cut-offs lower?
Health risks tend to start at a lower BMI in Asian populations, so many guidelines use lower bands.
Is BMI accurate?
It’s a useful rough guide for groups of people, but it can mislead for one person. Talk to a doctor about your own health.
Can children use this?
No. Children need age and sex charts, so please ask a doctor.
How do I calculate BMI?
Divide your weight in kilograms by your height in metres squared. At 70 kg and 1.75 m, BMI is about 22.9.
What is a healthy BMI?
For most adults, the World Health Organization uses 18.5 to 24.9. Lower cut-offs are often used for South Asian adults. Your doctor can advise you.
