Social character counter

Check your post against each network’s limit

Runs in your browser. Nothing is uploaded.

How it works

Each social network has its own character limit, and they count differently. X counts every link as 23 characters and most emoji as 2. Type once to see how many characters you have left on each network, side by side. Your draft stays in your browser, and it isn’t saved or uploaded.

characters left = limit − characters used

We count what you see on screen, so an emoji with a skin tone counts as one character, except on X, which has its own rules.

Worked example. On X, every link counts as 23 characters however long it is, and most emoji count as 2. A post with a link and 200 letters uses 223.

What this tool doesn’t cover

  • Networks change their limits, and paid plans can have higher ones.
  • Hashtags and mentions count as normal text.

Questions

What is the character limit on X?

It’s 280 for a standard post. Paid plans can allow more.

Why does a short link still use 23 on X?

X wraps every link in its own short link, so they all count the same.

Is my text uploaded?

No. Everything runs in your browser, and nothing is saved or sent.

What are the character limits for social media posts?

They differ by network and can change, so this tool shows each limit next to your text. Check the app for the latest.

Do emoji count as one character?

It varies by network. On X, most emoji count as two. Check your post in the app before you publish.
