# Slug generator

Turn a title into a clean URL slug

Use it at https://www.quicktoolz.com/tools/slug-generator. From QuickToolz.

A slug is the readable part of a web address, such as how-to-calculate-gst. To make one, use lower case, drop accents and symbols, and join the words with hyphens. Type a title and we build it as you go. You can remove small words like “the” and “of” to keep the slug short.

## How it works

Lower case, drop accents and symbols, then join the words with a hyphen.

Accents become plain letters, so é becomes e. Apostrophes are removed without splitting the word, and & becomes “and”.

Worked example: “Crème Brûlée & Coffee” becomes creme-brulee-and-coffee.

## Examples

| Title | Slug |
| --- | --- |
| Hello, World! | hello-world |
| Top 10 Tips | top-10-tips |
| Crème Brûlée | creme-brulee |
| Don't Stop | dont-stop |

## What this tool doesn't cover

- Only plain Latin letters and numbers are kept, so other scripts come out empty.

## Questions

### Should I use hyphens or underscores?

Hyphens. Google recommends them for separating words in a URL.

### Should I remove small words?

It can shorten a slug. Keep them if the slug reads badly without them.

### Can I change a slug later?

Yes, but add a redirect from the old address, or you’ll lose its links.

### What is a URL slug?

The part of a web address that names the page, such as “best-laptops” in /blog/best-laptops.

### How long should a slug be?

Short enough to read at a glance. Three to five words is a good aim, keeping the main keyword.
